KALAMAZOO, Mich.—ϲʹֱ is now offering an accelerated graduated degree in counseling psychology, giving students the chance to attain a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years. Undergraduate students seeking a bachelor’s degree at ϲʹֱ in behavioral science or psychology can enroll in up 12 credit hours that count toward a master’s degree, saving them time and money.

According to zippia.com, the demand for counseling psychologists is expected to rise by 14% from 2018-2028, higher than the national average. This number reflects a growing importance and value in mental health. New pressures such as social media, reduced face-to-face interactions and increased financial stress, among others have contributed to an alarming trend in high mental health issues. Western is prepared to meet this demand by making it easier to obtain your degree and become a licensed psychologist.

“The COVID-19 pandemic sensitized the general public to the importance of addressing mental health and well-being. This increased sensitivity to mental health has contributed to the need for more culturally competent mental health professionals, including counseling psychologists,” states Dr. Samuel Beasley, associate professor and counseling psychology program coordinator.

This nationally accredited program focuses on psychopathology, psychological assessment, counseling and psychotherapy theories and practices and practicum experiences. Graduates of the accelerated counseling psychology program are eligible for a state of Michigan license as a limited licensed psychologist. Courses are offered in-person on ϲʹֱ’s Main Campus and online. A limited number of in-person courses are also available at ϲʹֱ’s Grand Rapids campus.

Virtual information sessions are offered throughout the semester for those interested in the program:
