Berkey receives award from midwest SHAPE America

KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Dr. Deb Berkey, professor of physical education, is the recipient of SHAPE America’s 2018 Midwest Association for College and University Physical Education Scholar/Lecture Award.

Dr. Berkey has been at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍøÖ±²¥ for thirty-one years and currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the College of Education and Human Development in instructional methods and strategies, curriculum and motor development and has coordinated the professional physical education teacher preparation program. She has served in leadership roles at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍøÖ±²¥, several physical education professional organizations and at the Michigan Department of Education, in addition to her roles as professor and researcher. Her current research focuses on the remote supervision of interns using FaceTime and iPads.

Dr. Berkey was selected for this award because of her impressive credentials, her expertise, passion and service to the field and the impact she has on her students, colleagues and community. The award will be presented at the SHAPE America National Convention in Nashville in the spring.

(Society of Health and Physical Educators) is a professional organization that helps define excellence in the field, provides support to health and physical education educators and advocates for school health and physical education at the state and national levels so that all children are prepared to lead healthy, physically active lives. The MACUPE award is given to a female member who has demonstrated distinguished service to health, physical education, recreation, dance and/or sport at the college level.
