Is a master’s in accounting right for me?

If you’re ready to open the doors to even more accounting positions and career advancement opportunities than you can imagine, then a master’s in accountancy is perfect for you. And when you earn it at Western, you get the right training and support to work for a wide range of organizations in the public accounting, industry and government.

With a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work required to complete your degree, our program meets the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant's (AICPA) educational requirements. The AICPA requires new members to have earned 150 hours of college credit to obtain a CPA license.

Passing all four sections of the CPA exam before graduating with my Master of Science in Accountancy allowed me to jump-start my career in accounting! Having passed the CPA exam while enrolled in the M.S.A. program also presented several additional opportunities upon graduation.

Fast track your higher learning with an accelerated degree

Work smarter and save time in an accelerated master’s program. Once you’ve earned an undergraduate degree in accountancy, you can complete the M.S.A. program in as few as three semesters if you enroll in a full load of courses each semester.

What are the requirements for graduate admissions to the accountancy program?

Our online graduate application system allows all students (domestic, international and readmission) to submit required information into one system. 

If you want to apply to the Master of Science in Accountancy program, you must have earned:

  • A total score of at least 1,100, which is the sum of the GMAT score and 200 times the GPA for the last 60 hours in an accredited undergraduate degree program.
  • A minimum GMAT score of 480. (Note: Recent scores of the GRE are acceptable. Equivalent GRE test scores can be used to meet minimum GMAT-score requirements and can be used in formula calculations for admission purposes. See for information on conversion of a GRE score to a predicted GMAT score.)
  • A minimum GPA of 2.75 for the last 60 hours in an accredited undergraduate degree program.

Note: A °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍøÖ±²¥ accountancy major with an average GPA of 3.0 or higher in the following courses or equivalents is not required to take the GMAT or GRE: ACTY 3100, 3110, 3130, 3140, 3220, 3240, 4160 and two of the electives 4110, 4140, 4220, 4240, 4310 and 4980. 

If you don't meet these requirements, you may be eligible for waivers based on professional or previous academic experience. Contact the chair of the Department of Accountancy to inquire about waivers for the program.
